JONI MITCHELL – CALIFORNIA (BBC)
It should be obvious to anyone that loves music. Why i love this song ? It’s beautiful, i love this version and it points the way to how powerful live television could be on this planet if they would let it happen but then you don’t get this with lip-syncing to pre-recorded audio or sequenced dj jams…this is just a woman with real talent letting it rip.
SIMON & GARFUNKEL – RICHARD CORY (LIVE CANADIAN TV, 1996)
I guess i will carry on with the live tv show thing – here’s Simon And Garfunkel playing Richard Cory. A song about workers, poor people wishing to have the wealth and power of these big bosses, these captains of corporations and wanting to be them…but it ends with the rich guy blowing his brains out. Great song
NINA SIMONE – THE BALLAD OF HOLLIS BROWN
This is another song where the subject kills himself at the end but for a different reason,he has no hope and he’s watching his children die before his eyes of starvation. Nina Simone rules and i want to take this second to encourage everyone to explore the wealth of music online instead of just listening to the same crap song on the radio that you don’t even like for no reason other than you are a victim of boredom and to lazy to care.
LEONARD COHEN – THE PARTISAN
Speaking of fighting back – here is the great Leonard Cohen live on french tv 1969.this song is amazing and every time some french person tells me that you can’t sing in french beautifully i think to myself « what a lazy fucking asshole you are…fight for your culture ». This song makes me want to keep trying to write better more meaningful music.
JACQUES BREL – NE ME QUITTE PAS
Need i say anymore ? Legend and one of my favourite songs.
I could have chosen any number of styles or artists to talk about but i liked these tracks because they were live television…please keep in mind that i love the music of many nations and time periods and of all styles. To me, this is truly a psychedelic perspective on art and on life, enjoy.
